National Oil and Gas Forum 2023: the Eastern Vector of Development

We live in a time of rapid change as key sectors of the global economy have entered a period of global transformation. First and foremost, this applies to the fuel and power sector. But any change is an incentive for further development, for the search for new ideas, partners, and solutions. The key to successful movement into the future, however, is to rely on the knowledge, experience and competencies that have already been accumulated.

The decarbonisation of the global economy does not imply a rapid and complete phase-out of fossil fuels. In particular, gas production and consumption will continue to grow for several more decades. An imbalance between the traditional and new energy sectors is fraught with energy shortages and the onset of a true ‘energy famine’ on a global scale. That is why it is extremely important to develop the fuel and energy sector in an integrated way, to achieve a synergy effect through the use of both alternative sources and fossil raw materials. Therefore, it would be wrong to rigidly oppose new directions of the FEC development on the basis of the energy transition strategy and traditional energy sectors, primarily the oil and gas industry.

The geopolitical situation is also making its own adjustments to global energy markets. The role of the oil and gas industry as a guarantor of energy security has re-emerged against the backdrop of the global energy crisis.

We are witnessing fundamental changes in the oil and gas industry itself, in particular, in terms of redistribution of major commodity flows. Russia has taken another confident step towards the East, radically changing the vector of its hydrocarbon exports and the development of technology partnerships.

Given global trends, the National Oil and Gas Forum will begin the process of transforming the architecture of its programme from 2022. The key idea will be to facilitate the implementation of new economic ties and technological projects within the perimeter of the Eurasian space, within such international structures as the SCO, EAEC, ASEAN and BRICS. Other key issues of the event include: interaction between the state and business regarding technological sovereignty and modernisation of the domestic fuel and energy complex, priority areas and parameters of development of the industry's economic policy, analysis of import substitution programmes for critical engineering products and information technology, further development of climate projects and carbon management.

Taking into account the main vector of development of trade and economic relations of Russia and the tasks set by the Russian Government, the organising committee of the event decided that starting from 2023 the National Oil and Gas Forum will begin to change its name to the Eurasian Oil and Gas Forum, a process and corresponding rebranding we plan to complete by early 2025. By tradition, the forum will be held annually in conjunction with the largest international exhibition Neftegaz.
